RCIA

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is primarily intended for those who are un-baptized and preparing to receive the Sacraments of Initiation – Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil. It is the inspiration and the structure of how a community ministers to someone who sets out on the path to adult initiation (and children of catechetical age) in the Catholic Church.

"When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, 'I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.'" (John 8:12)

Initiation Process

  • The Pre-Catechumenate

The process begins with the Pre-catechumenate, in which the person shows initial faith in Jesus Christ and the Church. This is a time for inquiry and the exploration of the beginnings of faith.

  • The Catechumenate

The period of the Catechumenate is at time for exploring the teachings of the faith in a deeper and more systematic manner within the context of worship and prayer.

  • The Rite of Election or Enrollment of Names

The Rite of Election or Enrollment of Names takes place on the First Sunday of Lent. This rite is celebrated by the bishop or his delegate. The catechumens’ suitability and resolve to be initiated into the sacramental life of the Church is supported by the testimony of their sponsors and catechists. After this, the catechumen becomes known as the Elect.

  • The Stage of Purification and Enlightenment

During Lent the Elect prepare themselves for the reception of the Sacraments of Initiation by prayerful reflection.

  • Mystagogy

From Easter to Pentecost, a period of post-baptismal catechesis or Mystagogy. This is a period to more deeply examine the Gospel with the community.
